INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS:

What to do when your life becomes a desert

I lived in El Paso, Texas for about five years. It was quite a bit different landscape from the Southern California days where I grew up most of my life. Summers in the desert could be unbearably hot and dry, but one thing you could count on in August was the late afternoon summer storm that would bring in clouds and moisture. I welcomed that break from the heat. Especially since my first car did not have air conditioning. It was not unusual to experience 120°F about the time I would be commuting home from work. The refreshing promise of a summertime rain and breeze would get me through those dry, parch summer days. On occasion the rain would fall so quickly, so mightily, that a river would suddenly appear in a normally parched, dry landscape.

The unexpected summer rainfall makes me think of that promise in Isaiah 43:19-21 in the Message says, “

“I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands. Wild animals will say ‘Thank you!’ —the coyotes and the buzzards—Because I provided water in the desert, rivers through the sun-baked earth, Drinking water for the people I chose, the people I made especially for myself, a people custom-made to praise me.”

Are you tired of your life feeling dry and parched? Do you find yourself without perspective and direction, because all you see is desert? Are you tired and unable to experience passion and purpose? It may be because the rivers of life inside of you is stopped up and your life resembles a sun-baked desert devoid of living water.

Deep inside each of us are “rivers of living water.” (See John 7:38). These rivers have the potential to refresh, renew and revitalize our lives. When we seek God and think about ways to follow Him more closely, we are like trees along a riverbank bearing luscious fruit and whatever we do prospers. (See Psalm 1:2-3)

Sometimes our rivers inside us becomes stopped-up, and only a little trickle is flowing. Our life becomes a desert where we are always dry and void of life.

Maybe your rivers are clogged up with the rocks of offense, anger, unforgiveness, and disobedience. Maybe you feel zapped and unable to move on.

Make a choice today to ask God to forgive you as you forgive others. Begin to walk in God’s love that does not demand its own way, is not irritable or touchy. That does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. (See 1 Corinthians 13:4-8)

Clear out the rocks in your heart by letting go of past hurts or wrongs. Make a choice today to stop spending time talking bad about others, and nursing your grudge and angry thoughts.

Let go and let God make a road through your desert place and bring rivers of water through the sun-baked season of your life!

Expect God to do something brand-new. Allow Him to bring about the breakthrough you need. Walk in the freedom that is yours in Christ Jesus.

Wake up in the morning with anticipation that God is going to do something amazing in your life. Allows those rivers of living water to flow fully in your life to others. Become an oasis of blessing to those whom you happen to meet.

Blessings, Cindy
