CDM BLOG: "Acts of Kindness" November 2016
INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS:
Acts of Kindness
This past weekend, I enjoyed getting to spend a quick 15 hour visit with my daughter, Christal, and her family in Chesapeake, Virginia. It was fun to connect and have some one-on-one time with each of them. One of the topics my daughter and I discussed Saturday evening was how acts of kindness will reward you. (See Proverbs 11:17).
Both Christal and her husband, Andrew, have generous hearts. They are always busy doing acts of kindness every day, all the time. I admire the creative ways they find to reach out in acts of kindness to others and it is not hard to see how they are making an incredible difference in their church, neighborhood, community, and beyond. For example, the wonderful way they reach out to the neighbors. I found out that my daughter’s home has become a place for children to come to for a meal, snack, game time or conversation.
Their lives remind me of Hebrews 13:16 that says, “Do not forget or neglect to do kindness and good, to be generous and distribute and contribute to the needy …for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
When I drove in and walked through their front door, I noticed this beautiful white lit Christmas tree. My daughter said someone from their church recently called and said they no longer wanted a white Christmas tree, still in the box. They asked if our daughter and son-in-law wanted it. This is just one of many amazing stories Christal shared of God’s blessings overflowing on their behalf (see 2 Corinthians 9:7-8).
The Bible says we are to always aim to show kindness and see to do good to one another (see 1 Thessalonians 5:15) This admonition to show kindness seems straightforward enough; we need to aim to just do it.
This holiday season, consider giving the gift of “acts of kindness”. Need some help on how to get started. Consider some of the following biblical suggestions:
Be thoughtful, willing to yield to reason, and full of compassion. (James 3:17)
Be agreeable, and sympathetic and courteous. (1 Peter 3:8-12)
Be patient, and attentive to individual needs. (1 Thess. 5:13-15)
Be generous, rich in good works and ready to share. (1 Tim. 6:18)
Be useful and helpful, ready to forgive. (Ephesians 4:32)
Be gentle and willing to yield to reason. (Titus 3:2)
Be careful with speech. (Proverbs 15:4)
Small things done with kindness and love cause a ripple effect in our homes, communities, churches, and beyond. Allow your acts of kindness to show the love of Jesus to the people around you this holiday season. Remember that “Whatever you do, do it with kindness and love.” 1 Corinthians 6:14
Happy Thanksgiving!
